It has been in the news recently that the use of Tasers is being criticized because of safety issues. Since 2001, 50 people have died in police incidents where tasers were involved. While the number of people killed by guns is far higher, stun guns are being considered unsafe for the recipient. A taser (or conducted energy weapon) is not classified as firearm by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives since it uses compressed nitrogen gas as the propellant. Therefore, firearms-related regulations do not apply to the sale and distribution of the tasers within the United States.

I think I'd prefer it if tasers were legal to carry and all handguns were outlawed for civilians. Currently in New York State, tasers are banned except in the hands of police. Yet hand guns are lethal in 89% of cases. Tasers are lethal in 3% of cases. Both have near-perfect effectiveness ratings. The only difference is that handguns are designed to kill, taserws are designed to subdue. In fact, the courts have routinely held that the use of a taser is not a violation of clearly established Constitutional law governing excessive force. The only people in danger of dying from a taser attack are those whose hearts have been weakened by disease or narcotic use. People with pacemakers rarely need to be subdued. Drug users are often immune to pain or chemical sprays because of their 'highs.'

Should tasers be available to us as a form of self-defense? I say definately.

I agree that tasers should be an acceptable form of self defense. I do not agree that all handguns should be banned. I believe that if we make it more difficult for honest people to obtain these weapons of self defense then only the criminals would have them. It is still easier to obtain a handgun illegally than it is to get one legally.
I hate to be cliché but it is true. Guns don't kill people. People kill people. If there is one thing that history has taught us, it is people will find a way to kill one another.
I won't even get into the assault rifles or the 922r regulations. I will just grin and know that my home is bound to be one of the most well protected houses on my cul-de-sac.

i think today's show about gun control relates to this thread.  given the choice between begin robbed with a gun, and robbed with a taser, i'll take the taser every time.  at least i'll be able to file a police report when i wake up

i like the idea of gun ownership, but under the guise of a well-regulated militia. if every legal gun owner in this country had to go up against the army, it would be a slaughter. the government in 1776 had about as much power as it's citizens did. in the present, the government not only controls a well-armed militia of it's own (it's not ours) but they command jets, helicopters, tanks, to say nothing of long-range artillery and, oh, nuclear weapons. i wouldn't put it past our government to use nukes against it's own citizens to retain control.

i think most people would agree that hand guns are the real danger. there's not much you can hunt with a handgun.

and as far as self-defense goes, a taser will work just as well.
