Truth is, I don't care. It's like survival of the fittest (for the bars). The bars that closed sucked anyway. Like that one in Middleport that would have closed no matter what. She bought it, screwed it up, and blames the smoking ban for her mismanagement.
I am an ex smoker, and the smoke doesn't bother me at a bar. However, it does at a restaurant. The Village Eatery was a nonsmoking establishment long before the ban, and their business has been booming! I also happen to work at a restaurant. The people who used to smoke during their dinner sickened me. Our smoking section was rarely full, but the people who requested it amazed me. There are two young couples who stick out in my mind that always requested the smoking section with their two babies and one on the way. They are the epitome of white trash. How hard is it to not smoke during dinner (one hour at the most)? I know when I smoked, I could refrain for quite a long time. After the ban, they still came in. They just felt the need to complain to me how unfair it was to them. I don't understand.
The one thing that does bother me is the selective enforcement of this ban. I know of one bar that's been fined many times that is in the city. However, another bar that is in the outskirts hasn't been fined once. And they are probably the biggest offender. What is the criteria? Lots of people can tell you who complies and who does not. Why can't the health department come across the same info that I can?

As with anything in life it depends on who you know.It was that way when we were young,it is that way now.I agree the health department should be able to figure it out.The bars that are protected is prolly where they smoke.....
Not long after the ban went into effect, it became clear that money, not health, was the State's driving force behind the ban. And some bars have found it more economical to allow smoking and pay the fine each night.

I know that for me personally, I go out to bars with friends much more frequently now. I have severe allergies and smoke really does a number on me. Many years ago, my parents used to smoke. They both quit when they found out that it exacerbated my allergies. Smokers can still go to bars. You just have to go outside to smoke. It's not like they quiz you at the door and say "Sorry, you smoke. You can't come in"
I agree with kspeer. Most of the bars that have closed is because of mismanagement. I know there must be more people like me. The people that actually go out more frequentlynow that we don't have to contend with the "blue cloud".
Maitai, y'know what really sucks? When you think you aren't going to be engulfed in the cloud of smoke, and still walk into a smoky bar!
I don't go out nearly as much as I did when I was younger, but when I do I've noticed the smoke to no smoke ratio to be about 50/50 in Lockport. It's very strange. Finnan's (so not my crowd BTW) for example - no smoke. Then you have DJ's (not my kinda place either) for the other example - smokier than ever.
It's like a crap shoot. You never know what you'll walk into.
