Albany and other state governments are about to buy hundreds of millions of dollars worth of voting machines. A big issue today is auditability and transparency - which, for most people, translates into paper-based voting. Here's what I think is a much better way, an incredibly simple way for people to check their vote on the web. Check out [url=http://www.voteword.org].
I just read through the site, and it seems like a great idea--as long as your have the support of interested, responsible voters to make it worth the effort. What percentage of people voted in 2004, supposedly the biggest turn out per capita? It was some pathetic figure like 30%, wasn't it? I'd rather see us top 80% and then implement a system like this. Of course, it might be a good idea on a more local level, where elections tend to be closer.
