Wow! Are our city's elected officials that stupid? Why would they drag the Taste of Niagara into the pissing match they started with the firemen? Let's get the facts straight. They had a sponsor for the fireworks, a sponsor to pay the overtime to the firemen and they had a sponsor to pay for security. What reason can our Mayor and Council give for screwing them over? Officer Cross lit fireworks off in the middle of the a very populated neighborhood for a class reunion party with no firemen, no policemen and in an area with wall to wall houses. Make you wonder how they can cancel the fireworks at this event when they are using the same firework company as the city uses. And isn't Mr Hoose on the board that raised the money to pay for the 4tyh of July Fireworks? I bet he won't be volunteering much longer! If I ran this event I would move it. I'm sure any other city would love to have 20,000 plus people visiting their city. Can you say STUPID? Leave them out of your war Mayor. You'll miss them when their gone!

Way to pick a side JS, what really happened here. Does anyone know the whole story? I guess I mean both sides and what led up to it. This kind of event is not uncommon, so whats the problem? If it isn't going to cost the city anything and bring visitors to town it sounds like a win win. There are a few hidden costs if a city employee got hurt, workmans comp could be an issue. The income tax, social security and retirement payments for these workers can't be that much. I'm sure the company that runs the fireworks has to name the city as additional insured. I'd call him and ask for you, but Mayor Mike doesn't loke me much. When he was council president, he bribed me to move out of the city. Just kidding Mayor Mike, I know he misses me.

Yes AW, no comment is my answer. I can't pick a side. I know the whole story about who did what to hurt my event and think it sucks because I am the Co- Organizer of the Taste. I won't sling dirt though. I just think the whole thing sucks and hope the problem can be resolved. If not, we have another year to decide which direction we want the taste to move in and where.

What happened here? I guess I missed this cancellation! When was it announced that the fireworks would be cancelled? Was the Food event cancelled also? Is this a 'shot' at WLVL? Call me curious.

What are you talking about? This is not about the 4th of July fireworks, therefore not a shot at LVL. Of course the whole event is not canceled. We didn't have fireworks last year and had 20,000 people attend! If you really are asking what happened, here it is in a nutshell: fireworks permit issued by the city, then rescinded because of overtime concerns w/LFD....got a sponsor to pay the overtime costs so as to not cost the taxpayers...still a no go according to the CC.

However, there's still over 25 food vendors and restaurants, 28 amusement rides and games, live music all weekend (just booked Gil Transit for Sat. afternoon), a softball game on Sunday featuring the Jills, and a rally is being organized against the airbase closing on Sat. And now that there's no fireworks, we might actually get to sleep!

It was covered in the locport paper Wed.  Did the cc give a new reason after you got the donations? This whole thing looks like sour grapes to me.

Now that the Mayor had his stomach stapled I think he wants the food event to fail. LET US EAT and be be MERRY!

I have no idea what the mayor & CC could be thinking with this.

Maybe with the water deficit & this ulrich pipe mess they have that hemmoriging money feeling & are trying to batten down the hatches on spending so to speak.

Or their hanging themselves politically.

They should explain themselves though a little better so we can understand why they wouldn't accept money to pay the locals?

Couldn't the city contract the firemen out to the taste for a fee?

Giving permits then taking them away sets a bad example for future events that might want to take place in the city.

How can they hire the off duty police but not the off duty firemen?

Insults won't help the event. We started this event to bring the community together not further seperate it. We appreciate the backing of the people but some of the things written are going too far. Let's keep it a nice event and move on ...It's still going to be a lot of fun for everyone. See you at the Taste of Niagara!

I wasn't offended by you AW. I am just trying to stay positive and neutral....or is that positively neutral! Long live the Taste! Now I sound like a Harvey's commercial.

So you're going to pay to be on at least three radio stations ... but you want to be on WLVL for free?

Actually, Joe, I would have you on, but I'm booked tight ... HOWEVER, you're welcome to call in one of the few days I don't have a guest (Monday or Friday) to plug the event. And of course, you already have it on the calendar.

Actually Scott the only advertising we've ever paid for is the printing cost of our posters. Even Buffalo radio stations are civic minded enough to talk the event up for free. Last year, one of them broadcasted from the Taste for free. Anything that's ever been in the print media wasn't paid for either. It's a charity event, that opens many advertising avenues! Joe and I have been organizing events for the last 8 years, and have learned alot about geting stuff pro bono!

So, you'll pay printers but not radio stations, huh?

Kels, my comment was meant to be facetious - as indicated by the

I'm well aware of the attempted negotiations that went on last year ... and would assume the same would be true this year.

But as I said before - please give me a call Monday or Friday and talk it up.

'til then.

Just some info on the event:

Friday night is preview night from 5 - dusk (mainly for the ride co. to get an extra day in. Some of the food vendors will be set up like Johnny Jones the "hotdog guy", Mrs. Ribs, Phatdogs with fried dough, etc.) live music

Saturday 11AM - dusk - all the rest of the restaurants will be set up (One Eyed Jack's, Garlock's, Sheehan's, Molinaro's, The Basket Factory, Apple Orchard Inn, Big Ugly's, Jimmy B's, the Fieldstone, Kettle Korn guy, etc.), food judging, rides, a crafter's village, live music on the city stage (noonish for Gil transit, Liquid Forest later that evening), 3PM rally for the NF airbase.

Sunday 11AM -dusk - food, beer, wine, live music, 3PM softball game (Durf's Dollies vs. the Jills)

This is just off the top of my head. I don't have the restaurant list here or the band lineup. I'll post it when I get it.
