Pentagon officials said Saturday in their final appearance before the commission reviewing their plan to close or scale back military bases that the changes do not overestimate savings and would strengthen national security.
I certainly hope that the B-Commish addresses the Plutonium contamination at the Niagara Falls Air Base. One way or the other, closed or opened, this needs to be dealt with by our local leaders and federal officials. We don't need random locations with deadly materials. Especially those that the "boys" don't wish to admit to or do anything about except lip service!

BRAC DOES THE RIGHT THING –WHAT ABOUT DELPHI? ONE SAVED, ONE TO GO
Statement by Jack Davis, Erie County industrialist and chairman of the Save American Jobs Association, on the BRAC decision to retain the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station:
“One saved and one to go. Today’s decision shows what can be done when a community pulls together. The Niagara Falls Air base is Niagara County’s second largest employer. Saving Niagara County’s number one employer, Delphi, must be our number one priority. There is no Realignment Commission to plead our case to. We must go directly to our elected officials to save American industry and American jobs.”
“We have a strategy to ensure our national security. We must have an economic strategy to ensure America’s place in the global economy as a nation of producers, not just consumers of cheap imported merchandise.
“We see what happened to Lackawanna when we lost the steel industry. If we lose Delphi, Lockport will be another Lackawanna.”

WASHINGTON --A base-closure panel voted Friday evening to keep Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station open and most of its personnel in place, while sending eight Stratotanker aircraft elsewhere.
The nine-member commission voted to strip eight KC-135 tankers from the Niagara Falls base. The Pentagon wants to move those planes to Bangor, Maine, but added language to the decision specifically instructing the 400 or so support staff for those planes to remain in Niagara Falls.
I don't understand part of this decision. The refueling planes are going to Maine, but the staff stays here. I guess that means they will be given new job assignments. A good share of the refueling staff are also part of the national guard unit. Will they be flying to Maine for the weekend duty?
