I happened to see that Bob Rooney's great website, www.lockport-ny.com, was resurrected earlier this month. He had not updated it for quite some time as he had suffered a stroke. Be sure to check it out! It has always been a great source of news, views, history, and tourism information.
But he needs $4,000? To run it for the next six months? For 4 grand I could run this site for 50 years at today's prices. Unless, of course, he just NEEDS $4,000 and the site has nothing to do with it. And what of all the people that had donated before the site went dark? Did they get their money back? Doubtful. I know there were extenuating circumstances and I'm glad to see that Bob is feeling better ... but $4,000?!??!?!?!
After I moved down to school, I wanted to be able to keep up with the local news, politics, etc so I used a search engine to see if I could find the newspaper's site or something along the lines of Scott's site. At the top of the results list was this Rooney guy's website and, naturally, I surfed in. Well holy crap, I couldn't believe that anyone could put their name behind that vitriolic tripe and how could he refer to himself as an "editor" when he's peddling such pointless piffle anyways? It reminds me of people who write prose with line breaks and then call themselves "poets"; there's a name for this guy's type: poser.
In all seriousness though, has it occurred to any of you who love the "dirt" this guy is dishing that his site represents your city? Here's an example: when I travel for school, I usually search for my destination city on the internet to see if there are any touristy things I want to do and I think a lot of people use the internet in the same way. If I were a tourist looking to check out the Erie Canal and came across that site (which is entirely possible since it's address gives the impression that it's the city's homepage), I don't know that I'd be too impressed with LP. Do we really want LP to be represented by this mean-spirited, gossipy site for everyone with an internet connection to see? Glad that the guy seems to have recovered but I hope he doesn't raise enough funds for that web page.
