My brother gave me a program that will tell me who everyone is by their IP adress on the forum when they post anonymously...does that make anyone nervous? I can't wait to trace all the bashing.

That sounds like a plan many would like to see carried out. I think you will find that the bulk of the anonymous posts come from just a few posters. I would also bet that most of them are members.
As you have probably discovered, an IP address is a unique number assigned to a node (computer) on the Internet.
What is a bit more difficult is trying to track down exactly who belongs to that IP address. In many cases IP addresses are handed out 'dynamically' as a person logs onto a dialup account, or connects to their broadband provider. In other words, tracing an IP address to an individual is rather difficult if not impossible in many cases. However, finding out where it is from is slightly easier.
Your first step is to lookup and see who the IP address is registered to. DSLreports.com has an excellent 'whois' utility that will tell you exactly who belongs to an IP address. In many cases it will report back the name of the ISP, which is usually enough to get the ball rolling in an abuse case. You can find the whois utility here :
Joe, sounds like a great idea. However 2 things. 1) Have your wife spell check for you and 2) Come clean with all the names that you post under. All the names!
IP Addresses can be spoofed, so just getting an IP number isn't the holy grail some make it out to be.
message boards and forums can easily get out of hand, especially when anger turns hot and thought isnt really given to what is said. Anonymity can help people open up and speak their mind, but it shouldn't be hidden behind for hate speech or diatribes. That is the mark of a cowardly person. Just as hiding behind a handle, screen name etc....
Community forums such as this one, should encourage full identity in a profile. having a screen name is one thing, but not providing real information as to who is posting, doesn't give much creedence to what is spoken.
