Why Aren't We All Employed?

RANDOM THOUGHT:

This whole Delphi stuff has got me thinking....

When I was younger (about junior high, making my spending money by babysitting a few days a week), I used to notice that the Buffalo News always had several pages in the employment section.  A whole section in Sundays paper in fact.  I'd often browse through the jobs, finding the ones that sounded the most fun, or the strangest.  I couldn't understand why I would hear how people couldn't find a job - look - there were pages of them.  To this day, I still don't understand.

But I don't understand the hiring process either.  I've applied to literally HUNDREDS of companies.  Some, for jobs that I was more than qualified for, and I wouldn't even get an interview.

Now, I understand that one posting often results in dozens and dozens of resumes for the company and there's only one job opening.

But can someone please explain to me why there still are hundreds of job openings in the Buffalo News every Sunday?

Why can't I just go out, apply for a job I'm qualified for and get it?  (Job searching has always been an arduous task for me).  Am I the only one who thinks that getting a job SHOULD be easier than it is???

I always equated a good economy by the help wanted section... if there were a lot of jobs, the economy should be doing good right???  Someone help, I was never good in economics.

I think it's easier to understand when you realize that Western New York is a very economically depressed place compared with practically anywhere else in the rest of the country. Anyone who travels around the US at all knows exactly what I'm saying.

The economy here has been stagnating for decades and is reflected in the job market.

It's been my experience that the Buffalo News want ads function more as public relations for the companies that advertise there, and as a way to collect resumes for future reference. Also, you will notice that lots of those "jobs" are being listed by personnel and placement firms. If you send them your resume and get called in for an interview, you soon learn that the position isn't really available, or is different from the job advertised, and that the "bait and switch" has just been pulled on you.

The best way to get a good job around here is to bank favors, either financial or familial, with the Human Resources department of your favorite politician.
