A ‘fowl’ weather protest

PETA supporters protest Kentucky Fried Chicken’s treatment of birds
Bill Wolcott
Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

The big chicken did not cross the road to protest KFC on West Avenue on Saturday. The fowl costume did not arrive on time for the noon demonstration by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

It was cold, breezy and drizzling when the five PETA supporters stood in front of the restaurant. There were four customers in the shop, which offers Colonel Sanders’ chicken recipes.

Brian Tschaepe, 17, a senior at Lockport High School, led the local protest against torturing chickens. His father, Karl Tschaepe, provided support, as did Lockport classmates Jocelyn Pecoraro, Camille Granchelli and Mallory Passuite.

“I was planning on wearing a big chicken costume to keep me warm, but there was a little difficulty with the mailing process,” said Passuite, who was carrying a Pamela Anderson poster. “She’s a vegetarian. She cares about animals and their treatment. So does Paul McCartney.”

The young women wished that the Beatle would show up, too, but were not surprised McCartney did not make a Lockport stop

“I don’t think he (McCartney) got the letter, probably more difficulty with the mail,” the girls said.

However, this is a serious issue for PETA, which claims that KFC tortures 850 million chickens annually.

According to the PETA pamphlet, McCartney stated, “If KFC suppliers treated dogs or cats the way they treat chickens, they could be charged with the crime of cruelty to animals.”

“They cram them together,” said Brian Tschaepe. “The chickens’ throats burn from the chemicals that are around. KFC slices off their beaks with a hot metal blade. It’s not like cutting off fingernails, they actually feel that pain.

“KFC runs them through an electrical bath system, which would be fine, but in order to save money KFC turns down the electricity so much that the chickens are still alive when they are scalded.”

PETA has protests nationally on the first Saturday of the month and the West Avenue manager was alerted by her superiors not to comment or to allow interviews in the restaurant. KFC Customer Service (1-800 225-5532) could not be reached to comment.

“I think there’s better causes out there than chickens,” said Joe Speer, who agreed to step outside the KFC after enjoying lunch with his wife and 9-year-old son Tanner. “It’s a chicken — an ugly bird, great tasting. If it didn’t taste good, they would have been extinct a long time ago.”

The protest did not bother Tanner. “I really don’t care,” said Tanner, who attends Gasport Elementary School. “All they do is cut off their beaks so they don’t destroy each other so we can’t eat ‘em.”

Chickens are excluded from the only federal law that protects farmed animals, the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.

According to Tschaepe, KFC refused to sign any agreement with PETA. PETA proposed that KFC give the chickens more room to themselves so they won’t have to slice off their beaks; KFC stop drugging them, (the KFC drugs the chickens so they get too fat too fast); and that the birds be killed before the feathers are removed.

Pecoraro, who was carrying a Dick Gregory poster, protested, “...so people don’t eat at KFC. It’s gross. I’ve never eaten KFC in my entire life. They’re mean to their chickens.”

Granchelli was freezing, but wanted to support Brian Tschaepe. “We just had a lady drive by and say, ‘What’s the cause?’ She looked like she was going through the drive through. Mallory told her what the cause was for and she drove off. We saved the day, at least a couple chickens.”

“Maybe one and a half,” Passuite said.

Speer feels, “I know kids want to do things, be unique, but there are better ways to do it than protesting chicken.”

According to PETA, the KFC’s own welfare advisors agree that the company needs to more improvements in animal welfare. The PETA invites people to visit the KentuckyFriedCruelty.com Web site to access video footage of animals suffering on KFC-supplier factory farms and slaughterhouses.

I had a great time! The chicken was a little dry but still better than tofu burgers. How can those kids say they care about chickens and wear leather shoes and goose down vests? I mean I think Pam Anderson's hot...but I wouldn't protest with her. She's the farthest thing from all natural.... not that that's a bad thing right? And I wonder what these kids ate for the Super Bowl? Chicken wings? LOL!

I've had both Churches and Popeyes. They are pathetic compared to KFC. The chicken batter (which is the best part) was rather bland. And their versions of 'Spicy' are like mild Buffalo wings. Even I could eat them and I'm a wuss when it comes to spicy. At least at the outlets I tried. Maybe I've been spoiled all these years and just didn't know it.

MC, you calling something bland is funny. This from the guy who thinks putting Ketchup on a burger is going overboard.

While it's true I hate condiments, I am all about seasonings. Ask any chef, you offer to put ketchup on his creation, you'll get a sneer. Adding a little nutmeg or paprika to something makes you a connessuer.

If I wanted something to taste like mustard, I'll eat some mustard. If I want to embellish or emphasize a flavor, I will use a seasoning.

Mmm, mustard by the spoonful...

levels of spicy vary from person to person. To me, popeyes spicy chicken is quite warm, but I am very susceptible to cayenne pepper sp that might account for it right there. Either way, there really is no comparison between kfc and popeyes in matters of taste and flavor. That said, nothing beats home cooked fried chicken. Popeyes is still great for fast food chicken. KFC just tastes funny to me.

We all have one thing in common though :)

I'm personally not a fan of KFC myself (blech).  And the Popeye's at the Atlanta-Hartsfield airport IS a joke.  Spicy my @$$.  Maybe MC is right, after living in Buffalo for so many years, maybe I'm spoiled (and I love spicy food).  After all, I haven't been able to find decent wings here in Virginia either.  :(

I LOVE condiments though and couldn't disagree with MC more.  Hot sauce, BBQ sauce, ketchup, mustard, special sauce... I think condiments adds to the flavor of the food.  Who wants a naked hamburger on a sad little bun???

When I lived by myself my fridge contained beer, soda, and condiments (I rarely cooked).

I forgot there was a KFC in Lockport.
I wasn't aware it was still open.
Mighty Taco is my poison.

I don't think the popeyes in the atlanta airport would be a good example of the chain as a whole :)

I don't really care for all these mini outlets that the chain and fast food places are stuffing into retail establishments ie walmart/mcdonalds etc....

I mean they might be ok if your just dying to eat something, anything, but I wouldnt expect great food in that type of setting.

chicken wings and fried chicken to me are 2 vastly different things. wings are supposed to be hot and juicy etc... but fried chicken is another matter entirely. Hot sauce has its place, and in my mind its not meant for fried chicken. If I wanted hot, I would have ordered wings right?

If you like really hot foods I challenge you to experience chow mei fun or singapore fried
noodles :) Lets see if you can get that fire out LOL

Airport chicken and outlet chicken are the same. I've had both.

But I do miss Mighty Taco!

It's too bad your picture didn't get a shot of the protesters' feet. I'm always fascinated by vegetarians/animal rights activists who condescend to the rest of us while they're walking around in Nike's/other brands of shoes made out of leather! As if cows voluntarily give up their hides so we can walk around in style. Anytime someone starts blathering on about that crap, I always look at their feet and most of the time they're wearing leather sneakers; apparently their commitment to animals falls short once fashion is involved. To be fair, though, I do have a lot of respect for people who are committed to improving the treatment of animals; I'm just sick of the hypocritical posers who only want to feel important because they have a cause.

I miss Mighty Taco, too. Taco Bell doesn't pass as dog food as far as I'm concerned.

If you look at the girl leaning against the pole in the picture behind Joe, she's wearing a "down vest". I wonder if the birds voluntarily gave up those feathers?

Also, the leader of the protest had a "Beer Delivery Guy" coat from Steve and Barry's. I'm sure Steve and Barry's is all kinds of politically correct...I mean selling their stuff for $7.98, they must be!

If you click here, you'll see more pictures with their shoes in them ... but I don't think they're close enough to REALLY see the shoes.

While I don't see eye to eye with their cause, I commend them for HAVING a cause. Over on the Union-Sun website, the lead kid has really taken a beating. I feel bad. But he's held his ground pretty good.

So I read Lockport Journal's forum posts about this subject and one of the posters mentioned that, indeed, a number of protesters were wearing leather sneakers and, as kspeer mentioned, a down jacket. I don't understand the whole "I wasn't protesting leather-making that day" argument the protest organizer made in response. If you're out promoting animal rights, you don't wear animal by-products...period. I go to a fairly liberal university (you meet a lot of these vegans/vegetarian types around here) and I know a number of people who are truly committed to animal rights -- they don't eat or wear animals. Hell, they even refuse to wear make-up or use bath soaps, facial scrubs, lip gloss, etc that have been tested on animals. I think there's a special place in heaven for people who are that caring about helpless animals ... particularly those animals that the rest of us don't find cute and cuddly. I guess I respect people who show that level of sincerity. While I think those people on that forum were a bit harsh on the guy, I think that they were reacting more to the grandstanding/hypocritical nature of this protest and his posts.
