...Weah hunting people!

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with shotgun pellets.

Story Link

First discussion point, will charges be filed. If not why?

Second, this occurred a full 22-24 hours before the media or even the president was alerted. Why so long to disclose the event?

Thirdly, if our Vice President is willing to break the cardinal rule of hunting (Know what you're shooting at), can he be trusted with more important national matters?

"...at least contemporary politicians aren't having disputes a la Burr/Hamilton."

I guess I spoke too soon; it's too funny that I just said this like a day ago. I don't know about the first question, MC; I don't know what the procedure is for that kind of thing but my guess would be -- no. It does bother me that it took so long for this story to come out. It goes to show how secretive this administration is. Interestingly, Bush wasn't informed, either. What a weird incident this has been...I can't wait to watch SNL this weekend!

Oh...I knew it would be long till this discussion started here...lol  I am surprised it took this long lmao.

Yes its true, this was a terrible mistake on Mr V.P's part....but now honestly accidents unfortunately happen.  There are terrible risks in everything we do ~ whether it be hunting or race care driving, swimming, mowing the lawn etc

And hey...if this happened to you would anyone inform your boss?  OR would you take care of the issue of your friend being hurt and making sure he got proper care.   I hope that no one calls my boss if I am ever in an accident or anything like that.....take me to the freakin' hospital~my boss will have to wait.

Maybe all the hype is why they waited to let the media gouge into him.

Just my thoughts ....now I will sit back and take my pounding...I am expecting it.

Not that the whole thing is a very big deal....it's not, but it's hilarious......BUT he is the VP of the US, and I assume he has some sort of Secret Service posse with him at all times. So wouldn't one of those guys informed the pres. earlier than 22 hours later?

It was an accident. It would need to be proven it was a malicious action for charges to be pressed. If he was under the influence of some drug or narcotic then I believe that would be negligence on his part. Otherwise, it was an unfortunate hunting accident so isn’t a legal matter unless the lawyer decides to sue him.

Also, being stupid isn’t against the law.

Usually it takes a few days for a hunting accident to reach the papers. Their usually reported by the police & not one of the people involved. He may be the VP but this was something that happened during his leisure time. It had nothing to do with his job or elected position. I’m not sure why his office would send out a press release concerning a matter that happened in his personal life. I really don’t care other than some of the headlines said he was hunting for quail & I found that amusing.

A question I do have though is are not doctors required by law to report gunshot wounds to the local police?

The VP oopsed. It was a big ooops. He wasn’t appointed to the position of secretary of gun safety. He didn’t stop & think about making this decision & then choose wrongly. There is a difference between that & what happened.

This is fine for private individuals but you stop being a private individual when you're the VP. This is just the fact of the matter in our society today -- people that hold high office in gov't no longer have the luxury of a personal/private life that escapes public scrutiny. When you're the president or vice-president, you're not just on the job when you're doing official work -- you're always the VP; if this weren't the state of affairs, then Clinton's sex life wouldn't have been public fodder, either.

I agree...but the only difference is Clinton's "sex life" was part of his job....he performed those acts WHILE working.  Mr Cheney was on his own time.

I am not sticking up for one or the other here...both have done wrong....but to me the difference is Clinton's actions were intentional and Cheney's actions were an accident.

So you prefer a President that can't multi-task?

Well he apologised & took full blame for his actions.

I'm sure for some that won't be enough.

I wonder if Ahhhnold had this problem when he crashed his motorcycle & everyone found out he didn't have the proper license to drive with a side-car.

On a side note I think he needs to stay away from motorcycles & stick to his hummer's.

It's not like he's the terminator or something.

QUESTION:

Now that we have heard from Cheney,  would you rather hunt with him??  or would you rather be Mary Joe Kapekne writing in a car over a bridge with Ted Kennedy driving??

Mary could have done herself in by doing things to ted causing him to loose control of the car :)

Not something discussed in the news accounts of the day.

Geesh....well when your hunting ~ you are "supposed" to walk in a line.  When you follow the rules no one gets in harms way...  When you "break" line and something like this happens....he should apologize.

No offense here, but lines or not, does a 6 foot tall guy wearing dayglo orange look like a quail to you?

It's reassuring to see Cheney displaying genuine concern and almost some remorse this week. Bravo.

Now if only we could get him to feel that way about the tens of thousands of dead or wounded American troops he sent to Iraq...

No offense taken here...no a 6 ft guy does not look like a quail....and I am not placing blame on either man I believe blame was equal here...BUT when hunting birds (like this instance here)   ~ Walking away from the line and then coming back twards it unannounced one would be very much so be putting themselves in harms way of possible shots on birds.  There is absolutely no chance in hell that I would put myself in range of shot at anytime while out in the woods...and I believe that is what happened here. The bottom line is always know where all members of your hunting party are! BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS! For several reasons this is a golden rule for hunters and anyone in the woods....

  Just my thoughts...:O)
