There has been some criticism of the Oscars of late, the liberal host, the elitest guests, the fawning media. Most of the complaints seem to be stemming from conservative media figures who obviously were not invited and didn't get a goody bag worth millions. I could care less about the oscars, as I do all award shows. But the complaints I've been hearing seem a tad unfair, if not downright hypocritical.
Military officials praised football star Pat Tillman's bravery at his televised funeral, proclaiming that he was a hero because he lost his life at the hands of the enemy. Now it turns out his death was the result of friendly fire, and even though they knew this 4 days before the service, they didn't tell the family or the public.
Reminds me of the Jessica Lynch fiasco, also courtesy of the US Military. I remember hearing about how this brave patriot from Smalltown, USA was locked in heated struggle, was shot in the line of duty, fought bravely until being subdued , captured, beatenm tortured, raped by dozens of terrorists until being rescued in the nick of time by Special Forces in a blazing firefight. Then it turns out the truth was that she was in a traffic accident and the Iraqis rescued and treated her.
And who could forget the release of manufactured news stories that were written, produced, directed and paid for by the administration to look like real news stories. These ran on national networks and they were little more than pro-war commercials for the Administration. Do I even need to mention Jeff Gannon and his White House debacle?
I find it painfully ironic that our conservative government, which criticizes Hollywood so much, unecessarily makes up fairy tales about solderis in Iraq while reality TV is happening right under their noses.
