Lowest paying job?
Permalink Closed

"Waiters and waitresses, the lowest-paying occupation, earned $8,751 per year. That figure does not include tips, which were not covered by the Bureau of Labor Statistics survey."- from Business First

I'm glad that my profession won something. But since tips are not included, it's not a very good representation of what we really make. On a good Saturday night, I make 5 -6 times my hourly base pay per hour.......and I don't even work in fine dining. And when you factor in the minimal amount of hours actually worked (for me 13 -20 per week), it's not a bad gig!

Do you thjink it would be fair to instill some kind of national salary cap for certain professions? Or better yet, rate professions on necessity or contribution to society, and then establish pay rates accordingly?

For example, professional athletes or actors provide entertainment, not a high priority, so they would be low on the payscale. While firemen, who perform a basic public service, or scientists, who contribute to society, should make more.

It just doesn't seem like someone digging a ditch should make less than the guy telling him where to dig.

Granted!
My cousin was an engineer running a job site for his company & the laborors in the union were making more than he was.

I think most salaries are inaccurate.  People are not paid what they're worth.

I agree with MC - athletes are ridiculously, to a HUGE degree, OVERPAID, while other people are VERY underpaid. I mean, for example, how is being a golf pro a marketable skill???   How is that contributing to the betterment of society???

I think salaries should be based on prior education, experience and contribution to society.  How come actors make millions per movie???  It seems the majority of what they do is remember lines.  I can do that for that kind of money (mind you, I didn't say I could do it WELL - but let's face it, all of us can name at least a few actors that really can't act their way out of a paper bag).

I don't think I'll ever understand pay scales.  For years, my brother (barely a high school graduate), made more money than I did.  His job???  He washes cars for West Herr Ford.  I had four years of college and (at the time) 3 years of professional work experience.  *sighs*

On that note though, how important is college???  I know several people who make a very decent wage and they only attended high school.  Attending college seemed to just get me further in debt.
