Bloggers, my Mom and Aunt went to their monthly breast cancer meeting and sent me this email. I'm may be a little slow when it comes to this stuff, but this just floored me. My wife and I have been buying our kids this crap for years as they get older. You know, to make things more convenient for them. Needless to say we spent the weekend shopping for corelware or pyrex!

JUST A REMINDER.......

No plastic containers in microwave

No plastic water bottles in freezer

No plastic wrap in microwave

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in their newsletter -- it's definitely worth noting.

This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Dioxin Carcinogens cause cancer, especially breast cancer.

Don't freeze your plastic water bottles with water as this releases dioxins in the plastic.

Dr. Edward Fujimoto from Castle Hospital was on a TV program explaining this health hazard. (He is the manager of the Wellness Program at the hospital.)  He was talking about dioxins and how bad they are for us.  He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers.  This applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastics releases dioxins into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body.

Dioxins are carcinogens and highly toxic to the cells of our bodies.

Instead, he recommends using glass, Corning Ware or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, without the dioxins.

So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad, but you don't know what's in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.

He said we might remember when some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

To add to this, Saran wrap placed over foods as they are nuked, with the high heat, actually drips poisonous toxins into the food; use paper towels.

Pass this on to those that are important in your life.

Before putting too much stock in such claims, it is wise and pretty easy to research and verify the facts and historical timetable of these things. The prior 3 links are the first ones that come up in a Google search of - Johns Hopkins microwave.

Email has become the pranksters vehicle of choice for driving the dissemination of hooey and creating uncountable modern urban legends.

I used to get warnings like that from my mom. The last one warned me about hitting on a girl, having her slip drugs into my drink and waking up in a seedy motel bathtub full of ice with no kidneys.

(But if it makes ya feel better, glass is better for cooking food than plastic can ever hope to be...)

For those not familiar with the dangers of plastic, food or with trips to business hotels and being found in a bathtub full of ice, I offer the following in support of the use of glassware or ceramic as opposed to the use of any plastic, and, as a precautionary tale to all travelers.

Change the recipe and risk the result!

1 lb. kidneys (any), quartered
1 lg. thinly sliced onion
1 (10 1/2 oz.) can condensed milk, 1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
Marjoram & thyme
1/4 lb. mushroom caps
2 tbsp. flour
Oil for browning
Pie pastry

Soak kidneys in cold, lightly salted water for 30 minutes. Drain, remove skin and membrane. Dry and cut into quarters. Heat oil in heavy skillet or Dutch oven. Brown kidneys and onions, saute about 5 minutes. Add bouillon and 1/2 can of water. Add salt, pepper and herbs. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer gently, covered, for 2 hours. Add mushrooms. With slotted spoon, remove meat mixture into large Corel or glass pie plate. Place shot glass in center to "hold up" the crust. Stir flour into liquid, bring to boil, pour over meat. Cover with pastry, gashed to allow steam to escape. Bake at 450 degrees until pastry is slightly brown.

This is the Rocky Mountain Pass recipe. For higher altitudes, such as in the Andes Mountains, or as it's known, The Soccer Mom Recipe, add 1/4 tablespoon of salt to water before boiling. Chianti is a "suitable" choice for either ;*) thp, thp. thp. thp, thp, thp. thp, thp, thp

MC -

That happened to me once ...

Or at least, that's what I told my wife ... and that's the story I'm sticking with. :)

But in all seriousness, I got an email from a listener this weekend. I get this email at least once a month ... talking about Congress not being part of Social Security and that's why they won't fix it. Fact is, that isn't true. A quick check of Snopes will tell you that.

Email is great. You can get information out to a bunch of people quickly. But it's bad if that information turns out to be fabricated.

Check your facts before hitting forward. Always.

And don't tell my wife about the kidney thing.
