Oh I like this one "yes the yanks are coming, the yanks are coming, kiss that base good bye" But now I'm going to have that tune stuck in my brain. You guys are awesome.

We could have the next Woodstock there like they did at the Rome Air Base.

That would generate some money.

Dear Madam Mayor: Please consider this an invitation to the first Niagara Uranium Rocks the Night Away concert fest to be held at the old Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. Airport code IAG.

We're going to have highlight the event some real drop dead performers--such as; Elvis returns to Niagara, Harry Chapin, John Denver, Karen Carpenter, Bob Marley, Harry James and Frank Sinatra and many, many moldy others. Uranium Rocks Da House!

Ps--Don't breath the mist.

Wow, I leave the kids home alone and all hell breaks loose. I really don't think they will close the base, we have way too many bad things to protect.

Got this email from a friend ... who seems to agree with Scott "one f'd" Lefler that we should let it close ... but who thinks the whole thing is just a sham to let Tommy-Boy look good. Interesting thought. I'll bring this up this morning. What do you all think?

I wholeheartedly support the base closing. But you needn't worry. This is much sound and fury signifying nothing. A chance for Reynolds and all the local pols to play hero. The deeper issue is militarism and how our addiction to it is economically manifested. If the base is closed, the feds will have to deal with all the waste that's stored there. It would be like uncovering a rock that they know many ugly things are crawling under. This is merely an exercise by the political class to demonstrate that "democracy" works in America. This charade is particularly important at a time our local governments are being taken over by control boards. Did you ever think that the air base's very existence, a remnant of what occurred in the Falls re: development of the bomb, is what's holding this area back?

by closing the 33 bases across the usa the military "hopes" to save 48 billion over 20 years , that is 2.4 billion per year - the trade deficeit last year 2004 was 165 billion !   [that means we gave 165 billion more than we took in from the world , $165 billion siphoned from our economy to "theirs" ]   a mosquito burping against a hurricane will be the value of the base closings compared to the damage the american consumers are doing to us all - your self included ! yes you !

and in the same  NF gazette i see your area is contemplateing opening a WalMart ?   dont do it , the impact of that will kick your butts much harder than the impact of the base closing -  all of WalMart's cheap stuff is imported from china ! none of it is made in USA .      and local small business es that spend locally , hire locally , re invest locally , live locally will be decimated .... WalMart , target home depot , lowes , and the rest of the corperate fancy mall stores - profits all go to wall street , they do not stay in the local economy .

so say no to WalMart and stop buying crap imported from china , look at the lable and if it is not made in the USA by americans [or mexicans] put it back on the shelf and enlighten the under paid [because there are no more manufacturing jobs availible , because china has all the factories now  ] staff of the store that you dont buy it from as to why you dont buy that stuff any more !

Wouldn't it make more sense to keep the bases open instead of continuing to waste money in other places? I remember a report from about 8 years ago which outlined about a trillion dollars a year that is simply mis-managed, wasted and spent on things we don't need. I'm not just talking about senators taking plane trips. I'm talking about stupid grants, unnecessary studies, govt. showboating (such as the Inaugural party), assistants for assistants, and $400 toilet seats.

It just seems like if we got together a team of 100 (non-partisan) accountants, say 2 from each state, let them sit down with a copy of the budget, they could cut a third of our spending just through better cash management.

ok so that was not a personal tirade aaginst aw or dovey although i know dovey just bought a new computer at walmart ....   it was directed at every one who may read it .  including my own self , as sometimes i buy chinese crap also , but i really am trying to avoid it .

and i screwed up on the trade deficeit    [ i before e except after c ]        the actual # is $650.00 billion  dollars in 2004 .

and aw and dovey could probobly sell radiactive dirt from the mystical niagara area as an aphrodisiac to our chinese trading partners if they put a spam site and bombarded them [the chinese] with   exagerated claims  about what the stuff can do to enhance their  .....   hobbies between the sheets .....    or just let the chinese come in and smuggle it out ..... like they do now with poached bear talliwackers . ....

If we're going to consolidate these bases, could this in any way translate into more troops to send overseas? I'm not an expert on military policy, just tactics.

Any combat officer will tell you this is not an effective way to deploy your resources.  Everyone seems to be in agreement that closing this base for the reasons they've given makes no sense. That's our cue to figure out under what circumstances it would make sense. It seems like everything the government does under Bush has a secondary agenda, and the only way for us to see it is to back up and change our perspective. The scale of the Bush administration's plans seems to be both huge and long-term. 9/11 was orchestrated to allow the govt. to not only go to war, but to adjust our way of life, erode our liberties, and make us, the citizenry, more controllable. A lot of individual changes have been made that, when all tied together, makes us more like cattle. We are slowly but surely making leaps and bounds towards a police state, just like in "1984." And what Mr. Orwell penned as a thoughtful prediction is becoming our harsh reality.
