County sale of Mt. View - postponed?
Permalink Closed

I hear that there are some problems with the Contract and the County Legislature will not vote on the sale of Mt. View today.  I hope that the real reason is that they do not have the votes.

Anyway, the closer we get to election day, the more the people can remember.

Below, is the content and attachment to a letter faxed to Legislative Chairman William Ross yesterday on this issue:

Dear Chairman Ross:

RE: County sale of Mt. View

                                                  - comments and letter opposing it

I am sending this to transmit my letter to the editor that has yet to appear in the Sunday Gazette regarding Senator Maziarz support for Seneca Niagara Casino dollars to go to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, and the County Legislature majority caucus push to seel Mt. View nursing home. A copy of this letter is attached (listed below on the email copy).

I believe it is wrong for Niagara County to sell an asset they have relied on over the years to balance the budget and at the same time neglected. This facility offers services that a segment of the Niagara County population cannot find elsewhere, and should have been maintained/updated over the years.

Now, the County's neglect of the facility combined with the confiscatory mandates from the Governor Pataki administration, have led to the majority caucus to pursue the sale of Mt. View.

This step is wrong and too drastic to correct the fiscal situation here in Niagara County, and still provide necessary services.

Doesn't it surprise you that you only have one bidder? This one bidder is subject to a lawsuit by a company seeking back payments. Does that not concern you?

I do hope that the County Legislature does not sell Mt. View, and instead looks to develop ways to make up for past neglect so that it's level of service to the community is not diminished, and the taxpayers interests are appropriately addressed over time.

I do have commitment of high importance that prevent me from attending the May 17 meeting, and do hope that my comments are taken into consideration before the Legislature votes on Tuesday, May 17.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments.

Sincerely,

James A. Sacco

MAZIARZ SUPPORT FOR NFMMC and not Mt. View

I read about Senator Maziarz pushing to dedicate millions of Seneca Niagara Casino dollars to the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center (NFMMC), a hospital not even in his district! At the same time, Maziarz directed his County Legislature majority caucus to sell Mt. View hospital. These issues may not seem related, but I think they are.

Mt. View had shown a profit which for years were used to balance the budget, instead of investments to modernize Mt. View! Now that coupled with the Governor Pataki State Mandates has put Mt. View in the red. So the Legislature wants to forget how good Mt. View had been and sell it to a company being sued for not paying it’s bills!

Not the same with NFMMC. Even though they have been losing money, their employees are represented by the International SEIU Union which donated $5000 to the George Maziarz campaign last January! The local AFSME and CSEA at Mt. View cannot afford to give that kind of money to the Maziarz political machine!

So Maziarz wants to take Casino dollars from the people of Niagara Falls for NFMMC, and sell Mt. View. Not hard to figure out.

How do you know so much about this place? And why are you so concerned? In my opinion I think it should be privately owned. I know the only people who care who owns it are the employees and their families. I think you people are playing with fire. If you push too hard they might not just sell it ....they might just close it. Then the workers and the union would really wish they negotiated better it. If they would have just taken a slight pay cut they wouldn't be in this situation today. They make a lot more than the same type of workers in the private sector so what would it hurt? 90% of something is better than 100% of nothing....just something to think about.

jspeer - I know about the place because I pay attention to the news reports and am able to decipher what is actually happening.  I am concerned because I know that when ever government takes such abrupt action, we (the taxpayer and resident) end up paying more in the end.  Doesn't it bother you that only one company bid to purchase of Mt. View?

What about the legal action against that company for non-payment of past bills to a pharmacutical company?  Is this company going to be solvent in a year or so?

Mt. View had been in the black for so many years, and the County Legislature used the profits to give us (residents) a 0% tax increase throughout the 1990's instead of modernizing the facility.  Now we have mandates from Governor PAtaki because he cut taxes without making adjustments to spending!  Now he has to MANDATE the cost of certain expenses to the COUNTY!!  (By the way, Giambra is doing the same thing with Erie County).

I could go on, and I will later, if needed.

Give us more facts and we might change our minds. I googled you....pretty impressive stuff. I also googled Sharon, now I see the ties to Mt. View. I think the people of Niagara County should vote on if they should be public or private.

As I said, the basis I use to render my opinion on Mt. View is 22 years of working in and with government agencies.

As far as ties to Mt. View, I have none.  The person you refer to has not spoken to me, nor I to her for about 12-14 years.  At the time, I lived in the Albany area and did not know a thing about Mt. View.

Take care,
