Term extension vote looms as support erodes By Joyce M. Miles / milesj@gnnewspaper.com Tuesday, May 17, 2005
The Common Council will forge ahead with a public hearing about expanding aldermen’s terms of office Wednesday, even as sponsor John Lombardi says he’s not sure he has the votes to support a change in-house.
Lombardi, the Council president, posted a resolution asking Council approval of a local law that would change aldermen’s terms to four years from two. The resolution, if passed, would allow the Council to put a referendum on the November ballot asking the public’s permission to enact the change as of 2008.
The public hearing that must precede a vote on the local law will be held at the beginning of the Council’s 7 p.m. Wednesday meeting.
Already, two aldermen have expressed qualms about the local law.
I gotta tell you, I have SERIOUS reservations about this. In fact, I've expressed my reservations to Alderman Lombardi about this issue. I was opposed to his plan for three year terms ... and four year terms are even worse. John tells me that with two year terms, they have to constantly campaign. I told him that if they just did their jobs well, they wouldn't need to campaign like they do.
Call your alderman and tell them you oppose an increase in the term lengths. Conveniently, I have attached their phone numbers.

Despite my pleas and the pleas of three other Lockport taxpayers, the Common Council voted to increase the term length for aldermen. Now it goes to a public referendum. When I asked the city fathers if any of them had even one person - outside of their council colleagues - who thought this was a good idea, they stared at me deadpan. I will be campaigning heavily against this. It's a terrible idea. Stay tuned.

I don't think any of the council members are qualified to be president Scott. No, they can't get any higher on the political ladder. No one there has George as their name. Just a thought.
