Autistic Boy Found After Frantic Search Last Update: 5/31/2005 2:02:08 AM
A little boy’s search for bears resulted in a search for him on Monday. 8 year-old Holden Taylor, an autistic child, wandered away from his church group’s Memorial Day picnic, setting off a search in the woods surrounding Pratt’s Falls near Pompey.
More than a hundred people scoured the woods trying to find Holden, before friends finally spotted him more than a mile from where he started. They say the boy went to go look for bears in the woods.
Holden’s father, Alan Taylor, says he promised to take him on a camping trip soon and look for bears on their trip. He says he had no idea his son would go walking off into the woods, trying to find the fierce creatures today.
Searchers had a tough time finding Holden. His form of autism limits his ability to verbalize, so even though he may have heard people calling his name, he didn’t respond. Onondaga County’s Air One rescue helicopter was called in to search from the sky, while fire crews and other rescuers combed the woods.
More than an hour after he wandered away, Holden was spotted in a field outside of the Pratt’s Falls Park boundaries, unhurt.
Rescue workers say they were lucky to find him when they did, with nightfall closing in and countless area still to be searched in the 300 acre park.
