So here's the dillio. Bill Mahar says our military recruiting efforts suck. And some dipsh*t congressman accuses him of ... get this ... "treason."

Seems like according to some, "treason" is anything they don't like said.

So, since Mahar says stuff you don't like, you think he should be accused of TREASON? I thought you were SLIGHTLY more fair-minded than that.

Personally, I find him dry.

I'll take John Stewart, myself.

And, BTW, shocker you'd like the rightie, Miller.

I like john stewart too! And I do agree that it's freedom of speech. I just hate his show.

I like Bill, he's very intelligent and never backs down from asking the questions that really need asking. Like when he asked the former head of Homeland Security what he was thinking when they devised the color-coded alert system. No one had ever looked him in the eye and said, "Are you serious?" Ya know, last I heard, Dennis Miller was switching sides, wasn't he?

John Stewart often has guests of as high a caliber as Maher, and has an equally firm grasp on the issues. That's why I watch them, they can ask some hardball questions, make serious, thoughtful points, then insert ridicule where it's really needed.

We need to face it. Our recruiting efforts DO suck. Let's not whine about patriotism while we bull---- ourselves into complacency. Let's not ignore the problem and attack the messenger. Let's just resolve it.

The column also mentions a Maher quote from 2001, where he mentioned that the 9/11 terrorists were not cowards for their suicide attack. I wonder how many on this board would agree with that?

1) Miller isn't switching sides. He's just not as right as he's painted. He supports the war so everyone assumes that he licks Bush's boots ... but he's an equal opportunity criticizer.

2) I think it's somewhat sad when shows such as The Daily Show actually have better - more comprehensive news coverage than, say, ABC. But that's often the case. Frankly, I think these guys are less afraid to dig and to speak their mind than the people who are supposed to be doing so. I'll never forget Jon Stewart's appearance on Crossfire. He rips them a new one. And it's very entertaining (link)

3) I thought it sucked when Maher was crucified for the statement you refer to in 2001. I would agree with him. Dying for your cause takes nerve. Sending 18 years olds to other countries to do it for you doesn't. It could be argued that OSAMA is a coward. But I'd be hard-pressed to buy into that Mohammad Atta or any of the other hijackers (who knew that their planes were crashing - I don't think all of them did) were cowards.

I remember a Daily Show not long ago where they had a woman visiting from the Netherlands, and she said she loves the show. In Eruope they watch it on CNN.

I agree completely. One of the reasons America is in for the fight of it's life now is that they don't respect their 'enemy' and severely underestimate them. They provide no front, no boundry to attack, no flag to capture. This is a war unlike any we've ever fought. We've spent the last 80 years building our army on a single premise: defeating another army. High-tech targeting systems don't do much good when you don't know who or what to target.
