Fishy business for infamous landlord
By Aaron Besecker
Friday, May 27, 2005

LEWISTON — Michael J. Bergey, owner of an array of blighted and abandoned properties stretching across the city of Niagara Falls, is set to build a 30-acre fish hatchery in Lewiston.

Bergey, owner of more than 75 properties in the city, got the go-ahead from the Lewiston Town Board this week to create the 25- to 30-foot-deep lake and sell the clay mined during construction for profit.

Construction could begin in six months and will be built in 5-acre phases on 70 acres on Ridge Road near Simmons Road.

The green light came almost six years after Bergey took the first step to begin the project when he filed for a mining permit.

By a 3-to-2 vote, the board allowed Bergey to proceed with his plans without an approved mining permit after a year-long disagreement with town attorneys over whether such approval was needed.

Councilmen Daniel Kilmer, D. James Langlois and Michael Johnson voted in favor of the special approval. Councilman John Ceretto and Supervisor Fred Newlin voted against it.

Lewiston officials did express concern over Bergey’s financial commitment to completing the project.

When asked about concerns some might have about Bergey investing in a new business while some of his city properties sit empty and rotting, Bergey said he was hesitant to move forward in the city of Niagara Falls, preferring to see how development progresses.

He said some of the neglected property was bought on speculation and remains in poor condition because he was waiting to renovate the properties until development begins moving forward. He said he typically renovates many of his properties after purchase.

Bergey told town officials he needed the special permission from the board in order to make a May 31 deadline on a research grant application with the state Agriculture Department.

Because he has invested so much time and has a $10,000 security bond, Bergey said he believed the town was obligated to approve the project.

He also thanked the Town Board for what he called economic vision to bring a new industry to the area.

Bergey will partner with local environmental chemist Mark Schmitt in the fish-raising enterprise, known in the industry as aquaculture.

Schmitt believes this type of business will work in this area because the cooler weather will make operations less costly, though fish won’t grow as fast here.

Schmitt and Bergey have been working with Dr. Helen Roberts, a nationally known aquatic veterinarian who lives in Western New York, for four years on the project.

No such thing as Du clay. If from the area, why don't you know this location is not likely "in the zone?"  If you're going to mention science, please get it correct. That's all. Etu Brutus?

No offense anonymous.. BUT how do you "know what's out there" if you don't know the science?

Do you think it is a good idea for me to tell you what I know when you are anonymous?

Send $500. bucks and I'll put Science up on a Billboard by I-190 for all to see. Would that do?

Why say "Bring it on"?  What if I say you're either with me or against me...with the way you say "Bring it on?"

play nice -

i think it is safe to say that the ridge is not the same as the LOOW site , the clay from the ridge should not have a problem related to the LOOW site , the underground water from the LOOW site will be forced north by pressure of the water from the ridge which is south of the LOOW site ,     no clay should be mined from north of that location .... or people...or school .... or ... farm vegetables or grapes or .... you get the idea .

we are all on the same side - none of us want to see any more people die , horribly from the problems at the LOOW site ,   do we ?   I dont.

also note in the same article ; that the owner of the site on the ridge owns 75 damaged properties in NF , un occupied ,

either that guy thinks that the property will increase in value soon and he will be able to sell at a profit {speculation} , or he his holding those properties , empty , to limit availibility and to increase demand and drive up rental priceing ....     which is it .....it matters ...

Key wind resources

At the Horicon refuge, the hills that climb east are a mix of native grasses and farmland. And as they rise, they offer some of the best sustained winds in the state and postcard views of a major U.S. wetland. The terrain is known as the Niagara Escarpment, which was formed by erosion millions of years ago and runs from eastern Wisconsin to Niagara Falls, N.Y. The land would be worth a whole lot more with wind turbines

This is not the way I remember learning how the Niagara Escarpment was formed. The falls themselves are moving up stream due to erosion from the Niagara River that does not begin in Wisconsin. The escartment itself  formed over a million years ago due to several reasons, but I don't believe it was cuased by wind erosion from Wisconsin. The ecsartment in Wisconsin is often compared to this much larger Niagara Escartment. Matbe that is where the confusion happened. This is how I remember being taught about the Niagara Escartment. I'm sure if my memory has faded, you will tell me.

No name, no reference citation. Again. The "Horicon Refuge" is associated to Niagara how's that? Ummm--let's see, how does Wisconsin and Wind, and the title of this thread, "Clay" fit in with each?

Yep, wind turbines are a good idea. Is that what you are trying to get across? Did you happen to read the Porter Planning Study, or are you just chain-jerkin here? On your own with this?

Let's recap--Cape Cod=nothing. This info=fascinating. Not smart enough=won't sign in.

So, out of this post we gather that the writer likes the idea from the Town of Porter Master Plan that was substituted because certain town folk didn't like the idea of closing down areas of the town and the L-P schools, and turning the whole place into a wind farm. K? That's the message?

For information on the award winning, but missing Twn. of Porter Planning Study, done by U. B. saying that L-P schools should be closed and the students relocated immediately, see Town of Porter councilman, William Choboy or RRG's Mr. William Rolland. Chat with them. Ask them why THAT U.B. study was shelved and why they hired a commercial (paid for) planning company afterward replacing THAT Study with one that was more acceptable to them?

Speaking of wind farms--or bags.

Great questions Lou. I'm glad to know that my memory is still holding up. Maybe we should start history trivia thread and give oh faceless one a chance to dazzle us with strange phenomenon's. Because "we've got to get out of this place..."

Unfortunately true --  "If it's the last thing we ever do.."

Then we're all outa here--toes up & tagged. Till then though

"If it's the last thing we ever do.." And will be.

"We Got To Get Outta This Place"

In this dirty old part of the city,   (Kind of appropriate, eh?) Middleport, Lew-Port, Niagara, Lockport...
where the sun refused to shine                  Tonawanda, Pendleton, Wheatfield, remember "pervasive?"
people tell me there ain't no use in tryin'.        Some say that at Roswell, mostly they try not to.

.......
See my daddy in bed a-dyin'.
                (Kind of appropriate too, eh?)
See his hair been turnin' grey.    Science says some premature grey hair is from chronic exposure to ionizing radiation
He's been workin' and slavin' his life away. Union Carbide, duPont, FMC, Hooker, TAM, Simonds, Linde, Carbo..

In this dirty old part of the city,
where the sun refused to shine
people tell me there ain't no use in tryin'.
Don't ever believe it! Start a huge foolish project, like Noah did.

We gotta get out of this place,
If it's the last thing we ever do.
YOU Can BET YOUR LIFE IT IS!
We gotta get out of this place,
'cause girl, there's a better life for me and you.

Better life for me and you [x8]
