FitzPatrick Plant Shutdown
Last Update: 6/30/2005 11:53:25 PM

The FitzPatrick nuclear plant in the Oswego County town of Scriba is being shutdown because of a very small leak in the torus.

The torus is located in the plant's containment building and provides emergency backup cooling water. The plant's operators declared a notice of unusual event. That's the lowest of four classifications of incidents.

The plant, operated by Entergy, will remain shutdown until repairs are completed. The nuclear regulatory commission and state and county officials have all been notified.

Just because it is not in your county, doesn't mean it is not important.I find it very important,Not in my county either.yea you know who it is .

indian point is close to myself and 20 miles north of NYC , the have system shutdowns very often due to small leaks in the cooling systems ,  at least at indian point there are three different sytems that supply water to the heat exchangers if one has a problem the system can shut down or switch to another depending on the severity of the problem ,   some of our customers work there .

one guy works for a company that is building small places where security people can have good feilds of fire yet be contained in a small allegedly bullet proof steel enclosure with open backs .    he brought me some of the steel used after he saw our "security by mike" plate of 1/2" thick steel with four holes blown through it by non armor piercing 7mm 168 grain and 308 180 grain soft match boat tail bullets launched at a measured 2900 to 3050 feet per second , the targets were 100 yards down range .       the current issue ss109 556 62 grain nato bullet launched at a measured 3000 feet per second does not penetrate the 1/2 inch steel , almost 50 percent , it is not armor piercing but has a steel or tungsten core , a soft lead 50 grain nosler ballistic tip launched at a measured 3950 feet per second almost penetrates the 1/2" steel and leaves an impressive crater . also blows right through 1/4 inch soft steel    , 9mm or 44 magnum handgun rounds dont even penetrate the surface,  they just leave lead smears    -         the steel used at indian point  is only 1/4" , but of a stronger alloy .   one of theses weekends i will cart some off to the range to see ...

hopefully it has not absorbed any radioactivity .....

Is having a small radioactive leak like being a little bit pregnant?

there was no claim of any radiactive leak , only a leak in a redundant back up coolant supply .

but ask , where is the spent fuel stored and what is done with it after it has been stored .

Mike,

The sad part of that story is that those people shouldn't need a crusader. The Department of Energy should be tripping on itself trying to help the people whose lives they have ruined ... but instead, they're dragging their feet hoping former nuclear workers die before their claims are processed. For shame.

The nuclear power plant in Perry, Ohio (my hometown) was built on a known fault line. But they must've figured it would be okay, since there was never any earthquakes before it was built. And what do ya know, when I was a junior in high school we had an earthquake that cracked one cooling tower. I don't remember what the richter scale number was for the quake, but it was enough to knock books down of shelves and we most certainly felt it. My English teacher got under her desk! We weren't told for about 15 minutes what happened. It was a very loud rumble and we thought the plant blew up (even though we'd been told that was impossible).

Geniuses, huh?
