KKK fliers found in City Hall rack By Eric DuVall / duvalle@gnnewspaper.com Wednesday, July 13, 2005
Tourists looking for information on what Lockport has to offer from city hall got an offensive glance at what leaders hope isn’t an attraction.
Several two-page fliers listing a Lockport post office box, calling President George W. Bush a “Zionist war criminal,” and advertising the Ku Klux Klan and Canada’s “Nationalist party” were stuffed into a rack of tourist brochures near the main entrance to city hall.
The problem was first brought to attention by a Pennsylvania woman in town to visit the Lockport Underground Caves, according to Community Policing Aide Mark Sanders.
“I had a citizen give it to me and said they were here touring at the caves, and this was in the rack,” Sanders said. “It’s stupidity. It’s something that am I surprised to see at city hall, most definitely.”
Mayor Michael Tucker agreed with Sanders, who notified him about the flier. Tucker said that the rack isn’t maintained by the city, and that city personnel likely wouldn’t have spotted it.
“It was brought to my attention at 5 (Monday) afternoon,” he said. “I guess there’s some ignorant people around here.”
As for the unfortunate location, Tucker said that a white supremacist message certainly isn’t one he wants to put forward to visitors.
Wow, I haven't seen legitimate Clan literature in these parts for a real long time. Are we sure this wasn't just kids printing crap off the internet? Or do we need to raise the whole Confederate flag issue again?

It's hard to believe that these things still happen. How do people function with that much hate?

Hate is everywhere, in every person. I think most folks consider themselves fair and just people, with healthy attitudes. But the reality is that there's a biggot and a racist on every street corner and in every living room in America.
A lot of people function daily on hate in this country. Not just the KKK or Illinois Nazis, but anti-abortionists, feminists, political groups on both sides, abusive men, vindictive women, and the religious right. For many it's the only way of life they've ever known. They grew up with hate, were raised by hate, and now they don't even recognize it for what it is. For example, Christians hate gays. They don't do it because it's fun to hate them, they just think it's the right thing to do, because they don't know any better. I find most hate is born out of ignorance.
