Yes, they are athletes. In the same sense horse shoe tossers and bowlers are considered athletes. You can be a big fat slob and still be tops in your sport. Any sport that you can drink, smoke and be a sloth on the other 6 days a week I wouldn't consider any of its participants as best athlete ever...maybe if your Nascar heroes pushed the cars around the track I might consider them top athletes. Lance has beaten impossible odds by winning 7 tours. That alone makes him the best athlete ever and then doing it after almost dying from cancer makes him GOD. I myself hate watching the Tour de France almost as much as I hate watching NASCAR but the fact is Lance is best ever.

My dictionary defines a 'sport' as 'an athletic activity or pastime.' It takes more than just competition to make someone an athlete. All NASCAR drivers really need are endurance and hand-eye coordination. If you are going to call them athletes, then you need to include butchers, truck drivers, pizza cooks and your local paper carrier. Heck, anyone who can play his X-Box for 14 hours a day is an athlete by that definition. BZZZZZ! Thanks for playing.

mindcrime i'm getting a hint your not a nascar fan and you don't believe stock car racing is a sport, i have to dis-agree i've drove stockcar before and its a sport, just for example: who ever wins the championship at the end of the season makes at least ten million dollars, if that was a regular job well then everyone would do it.
maybe we need a poll on if nascar is a sport or not?
Someone explain the whole Tour thing to me. I was told it was a team sport & the reason Lance finishes first is because the other American's work with him to finish first. Is this true or not?
