Looks like the GOP retained that seat in Ohio, but by a rather slim margin.

Should this be cause for concern? For which side?

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that Hackett lost, but in all honesty, it would be like Reynolds losing this district - highly unlikely.

Apparently there was some local issues thrown into the special election too. This from the opinion section of The News Herald (Lake County):

Thomas O'Neil Aug, 03 2005
I was appalled last week when I finally got the details behind Painesville’s Issue 1. I was appalled that our council would attempt to sneak such an amendment through during a special summer election when most are on vacation, not paying the attention they would during a regular election and at what cost? Special elections are not cheap and you and I boys and girls payed for it. At least it was stuck down.
I believe it’s time for some changes in Painesville City Government. For one thing I believe we should end the City Manager position and return to an elected Mayor. The City Manager is only accountable to Council, not you and me. And I know I will be voting against ANY seated council member after this.

Hmm. Sound familiar? What if it read, "The County Manager is only acceptable to the Legislature, not you and me." How would that strike you?
