State Regent Urges Longer School Year WBEN Newsroom - Monday, August 8, 2005 07:59 AM
Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - New York State Regent Bob Bennet says education leaders should consider extending the school year.
In many states, students are already back in the classroom by this time of year, while New York students have another 5 weeks of summer vacation.
Bennet tells NewsRadio 930 WBEN its time to push for a longer school year to help students achieve rising standards. Bennet says when state lawmakers return to session, he will begin lobbying to change the start of the school year.
So will this mean more money for teachers? I enjoy spending time with my kids in the summer. I hope they let us vote on this. We shouldn't overload the kids.

It seems to me that the more kids are required to memorize (they can't learn all that crap), the longer the school year needs to be for them to regurgitate it.
What they should REALLY do is minimize the junk they're forced to sit through and get back to the basics. I mentioned this morning about kids being forced to buy $100 calculators. That's asinine.
Until they do that, the school year NEEDS to be elongated to compensate.
I heard about a program (I forget which state it was in) but they used summer recess as a reward for high grades. If you averaged A's, you got you typical 3 months off. B's got only 2 months and C's get one month. If your average is a D or worse, you wnd up at school full time. Obviously, if you're getting A's, you don't need the extra attention, right?
My buddy told me he went into a McDonalds to get chicken nuggets, and asked for a half-dozen. The kid behind the counter said "They only come in 6, 9 & 20 pieces." That crap has to stop.
