2nd Amendment anyone?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- People in Louisiana rushed to purchase guns in the chaotic days of looting and lawlessness following Hurricane Katrina, according to law enforcement officials still trying to track down thousands of other weapons that were lost or stolen.

The increase was sharpest in the days immediately following the hurricane, according to FBI criminal history background checks on prospective gun buyers.

This is a great example of why a "waiting period" to buy a gun is unreasonable. Imagine if you will ... you're a law-abiding citizen, who's only crime is being in a town torn by rioting and looting ... and you have to WAIT to buy a gun in order to protect yourself.

BANG!!!

23 hours too late.

There are other ways to protect yourself--such as, bleach in the eyes, a charged TV capacitor connected to your door knob, a big dog, a baseball bat, knives, forks, gasoline thrown on someone and a zippo lighter, pool cue in the eye, pitchforks and shovels, flaming sticks & loud polka music.

And eventually, the government will outlaw them all.

and what is the most important rule about participating in a gun fight ?

bring a gun .

better still bring a gun that you are very familiar with , a gun that goes bang every time you pull the trigger , a gun that comes up effortlessly that when aimed with your eyes closed and is pointed right where you need it be as your eyes open , a gun that is "sighted in" so that you know where the bullet will land when the shot is taken .

have a laser sight with batteries charged always sighted to point of impact at the range you expect to need .             play the laser on the eyes of the unfortunate zero , you may be able to temporarily blind and or disorient  him or her without the need to shoot .

try to back up and leave the area but if you must shoot , do not shoot to wound , do not shoot into the air [you may injure someone far away], shoot at the center of mass [torso] .

Is the "waiting period" required so the FBI can do a background check on the prospective owner? Or is the waiting period more time after a background check?

The waiting period is for the background check.

It also includes a 'cool down' period, so if someone is anrgy with someone else, they can't just go get a gun and shoot them. They have to wait a week or more to 'cool down.' So always plan ahead. Buy yourself a gun BEFORE someone pisses you off

NeoCon, firearms have permanent effects. What if you make a mistake while you're sighting between someone's eyes with that laser sight? What if your powerful ammunition goes through your target and kills a 7-year-old girl as well? Guns are not designed to wound, they're designed to kill. You sound too eager (bloodthirsty?) to use that gun.

I'm moving to a state where Tasers are legal. Problem solved.

I can think of about a dozen people off the top of my head that don't own guns & that would probably shoot themselves in the foot or worse someone else accidently if they were given guns in a time of crisis.

I understand the situation, but you can't just hand out guns to people who don't know how to use them.

however, forming a town militia or deputising everyone who wanted a gun & showing them proper gun safty would of been very creative & maybe even legal & a good idea to protect against bands of looter's.

The 30 mins. it took to show people where the safty was & how to load a gun would be quicker than the waiting period.
