Narrowmindcrime,

Did I say move them to Transit??   Believe it or not but Lockport is not the only place where these people can live.  It is time to make Lockport a less welfare friendly community.

Yes. You said we should move these people out of Main St. and closer to shopping, which is why MC suggested Transit. There's not much else around.

Now you want them out of Lockport altogether. (As if your taxes wouldn't pay for them if they moved to North Tonawanda or Newfane...)

Why not just round up everyone not up to your standards, put them on a reservation, and proclaim them a sovereign land? Then you won't have to look at them anymore.

"Wait 'til they try to scoot across that street..."

Actually if they lived on Ruhlman or Strauss, there's no reason to cross Transit. Shop at ALDI or Save A Lot for food. Dollar Tree's on the same side.....Office Max, Home Depot, banks, fast food..... There's a path that comes up behind Home Depot that leads to Ruhlman Rd. apts. that has been used for decades as a short cut.

Actually, I just learned that Ruhlman road Apts. were in such bad shape that they were not recertified as Public (HUD, subsidized) Housing. They failed their inspection. I mean poor people live there, but nothing is subsidized, and no-one really wants to stay there, but can't afford to move. The inside is worse than the outside.

Also people with a primary drug and/or alcoholism diagnosis cannot get SSI or SSD. They have to seek treatment, first and then see what their primary problems are...for example, someone with a mental illness diagnosis could be masking those symptoms by self medicating with drugs and alcohol. They would have to prove that their psychosis was not a result of the drug/alcohol use. The only way to do that is by past hospital documentation, or by getting clean and sober and showing that the mental illness still manifests itself.

Just like the opinions of those living in low-income housing. Or anyone that rents for that matter. I'm so glad we're not judgemental here. And to the person who went off to find the smart people cause they didn't understand that prostitution is a victimless crime ... have fun. Hopefully they'll all speak down to your level.

Scott,

Sorry to pile on away from the emminent domain isssue,

but aren't the Walmart opinions on low income housing important because most of them reside in it?  Thats how Walmart keeps their prices low, making the taxpayers subsidize all their benefits through welfare and medicaid!

Wal-Mart has done it's share of damage by abusing eminent domain as well. They don't always buy the empty fields or abandoned lots to build their SuperCenters. Sometimes they displace people for the betterment of the community. Or some crap...

So, now the talk is to keep it low income, put a nice old fashioned looking facade, and first floor retail space. Somehow, I don't think the retail thing will work. Good spot for Dollar Tree maybe?

The city of Oakland is seizing land that has been occupied for more than fifty years by a locally-owned tire shop. Why? To give it to mega-retailer Sears. So Sears can open up its own tire shop.

One thing to keep in mind as you read about these cases: "Fair market value" means fair market value for the land the business sits on. If you happen to run a business on that land, the city is under no obligation to compensate you for loss of income, or to cover the costs of reopening your business elsewhere.

Wow, now that sucks!

Ever notice when they assess your house for tax purposes, it's suddenly worth $40,000 more than what you could ever get for it? And with eminent domain fair market value winds up being far less than what it really is worth.

To say nothing of what it's worth to you personally.

No one is denying the folks who live there now a place to live, it simply should not be on Main Street.
