I dont understand the anonymous postings. They serve no purpose, dont answer any questions, and have zero credibility. The City already has a small staff of which 6 men are assigned to ambulances and fire apparatus, this is called cross or dual trained. No, no other neighboring community offers this service at this level except Jamestown, which recently hired men to staff an ambulance for transport proposes, (which is a new service for them and an influx of revenue) and cut overtime and Batavia which branched out into County wide EMS. If you are refering to NT, please post your name, check your facts and get back to me, send me a private message if you prefer. The point of my previous post was to point out that it is difficult to compare dollar figures side by side when you dont have all of the costs. Things you can compare would be items such as run numbers, response times, services and level of services available. Each community needs to decide what they feel they need, given the makeup of that community, not a few elected politcal hacks.

"I do believe that through attrition (no layoffs) Lockport should supplement their force with volunteers - but keep the ambulance service going. We should have paid drivers and a very small crew of fireman."-Anon.

Who exactly is going to volunteer? I bet there is just all kinds of paramedics with lots of time on their hands!

What I don't get is why do people want to pay the driver of the ambulance and not the EMT who goes through 3-4 years of training and constant refresher classes? Nothing against the driver but come on people. Anyone with a 3rd grade education can see how stupid this is.

THAT is just one of the BIG problems of the volunteers. The lack of numbers such as trained personnel. The lack of personnel willing to obtain training and the lack of personnel who have time for volunteer service.. This is not a personal shot at the indivuduals, these are facts. If you have an emergency, be it medical or fire, etc., who do you want? trained, or someone who just hangs out at the social hall?

I agree. Paid is the way. Vollies are too unpredictable. If I want to play craps I'll goto the casino and play with money not stay home and play with my life.

It never takes long for a thread about fire services to turn into Volunteer bashing.

and I think if you brainiacs read the posts it says to keep the emt services as they are, we just don't need another 6 guys standing around waiting for fires.

Face it, the city voted, they picked the less qualified candidates over the new ones because the firefighters lobbied so much for them.

It's time for change!

So you actually think the election was a referendum on the Fire Department. Doubtful. And if it was looking at the narrow victory margins of the incumbents I would hardly say they have a mandate. 53% of the vote isn't alot for a 7 term Alderwoman to win with against a political newcomer, and that was the biggest margin. Factoring out the built in advantage of incumbancy and name recognition, they did quite poorly and should see this election not as support for what they have done, but as a call for some change.

See, the thing is most of these guys are both (emt and fire). They are cross trained...more bang for your buck! The only ones left that are just fire have been there for a very long time.
