In more and more stores lately you notice the self check-out lanes. You know, where you scan and bag your own groceries. Fun, fun. Yes, you too, can be a cashier.
Now, I don't know if these things are put there in an effort to reduce the stores work force, or to make for a more active customer, but I think they are a horrible idea.
First of all, I have been lucky enough never have had to work in Customer Service. This was purposeful.
I understand that when you buy even a simple loaf of bread, the money you pay for the bread goes toward a lot of different things associated with that loaf of bread. The farmer who grew the wheat, the factory that produced it, the transportation costs to the store, the various overhead the store has, including employees (and a million other costs in between).
Part of what I'm paying for in that loaf of bread is the employee. The employee to CASH ME OUT.
Stores with self check outs are saving money on employees. The more self checkouts they have, the less employees they need.
I see it like this: If stores want me to scan and bag my own groceries, they can give me a discount for doing such. 'CASHIER' IS NOT MY JOB!!!
I think a 5% discount is worth checking out and bagging your own groceries.

Home Depot on a sat afternoon can use about 5 of these. Considering they usually run just one register + the service desk most times, it won't be costing people jobs.
There are people that work at home depot? I can never seem to find anyone that actually wants to help me there. It is usually " not their department ~ but they will go get the guy who works here" which in return...never comes.
And the "service desk" ~ I thought that was just a meeting place for the people,....people always chatting and giggling but no one can help out the customer.
So your right it wouldn't cost anyone a job....cause the people that work there don't do anything anyways~
I like using the self-check out. I find the self-check out lines are generally much quicker at the grocery store....It totally saves a step, because the customer takes the item out of the cart, scans and bags....as opposed to the customer taking it out of the cart, placing on the conveyor, the worker picking it back up, scanning, then bagging.
those check out your self machions are great but just think ya got a employee watching everymove ya make, just to make sure you pay for all in your bag. but i think its a good thing.
