I feel the city of Lockport should rent a storefront at the new City Centre.  Since most tourists come into the city via Main Street it is missing the boat if they don't have a "active" presence on Main Street to service the incoming tourists.  I don't mean a sandwich board with an arrow on it but an actual tourist shop with a sign on Main street and someone friendly and upbeat manning it.  It only makes sense.

Maybe Mr. Ulrich should only charge the city a dollar for a space. They did pay for the bulk of the project... in the form of grants, cheap land and work performed.

downtown needs a great eye catcher for poeple that are just passing by our new face lift city. Needs to be something that will bring them from miles.

I agree, Lockport needs an attraction to draw people in.  Jamestown built a hockey rink in their downtown a few years back and it turned their city around, businesses lined up to go into the retail space.  Look at how many parents in the area haul their kids up to Amherst Pepsi Center and Sabreland.  When the Kenan Center was open they had it rented out everyday and there were games there at 2 and 3 in the morning because of the demand.

So imagine a hockey rink in or near downtown..parents need somewhere to go, maybe do some window shopping or get breakfast, lunch or dinner or maybe see the locks, caves and the other areas of interest in Lockport.  Hockey tournaments and ice skating shows draw huge crowds and they need somewhere to sleep so now our local hotels, motels and restaurants are busy.  Many jobs are also created to run the rink.  I wish I knew how to get the ball rolling on this, maybe corporate sponsorship..anyone have any ideas?

I think that Lockport needs an event center more than an ice rink. More people would use it. Don't get me wrong I know those Beemers, Volvos and Hummers don't get good gas mileage and the ride to Amherst sucks but let's cater to the masses. If Lockport was to do either. I would like to see it done by a private company that is not just looking for everything to be paid for by the taxpayer and a tax free 15 year deal.

Why not incorporate an events center with an ice arena, HSBC Arena does it and so does Jamestown.  Take a drive to Jamestown and see what their Ice arena did for their downtown:

The Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena is the new face of downtown Jamestown, in Chautauqua County, New York!

This brand new facility features 106,000 sq. ft. twin pad ice rink.

In its first year of operation over 400,000 patrons came through the doors. This state-of-the-art Arena is home to hockey tournaments and hockey camps with teams from all over the US and Canada. It is the location of choice for national figure skating competitions, a traveling circus, high school graduations, proms, weddings, New Years Eve celebration and numerous trade shows.

The Ice Arena is set in downtown Jamestown in Chautauqua County, NY and just minutes from the world famous Chautauqua Institution. Chautauqua County, in southwestern New York is known to be "Not a destination, but a thoroughfare for Buffalo, Rochester, Pittsburgh and Erie". Be sure to check out all this area has to offer when you visit the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena!

Whether you're looking for afternoon of fun on the ice
or the perfect location for your next event,
the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena is the

"Coolest Place in Town!

Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena - The key is a big corporate sponsor such as this!
