The former head of the Newfane summer recreation program pleaded guilty to a reduced charge Thursday morning relating to allegations he stole from the town.

Ruhmel, 34, of South Main Street, Newfane, pleaded guilty in Lockport Town Court to one count of disorderly conduct and was sentenced to a conditional discharge of a 15-day jail sentence. He was also ordered to pay $400 in restitution.

Newfane School Superintendent James Mills slammed (DA Matt) Murphy for pursuing this case against Ruhmel.

“The very idea that the District Attorney’s office is pursuing the case appeared ludicrous from the start,” Mills said. The fact that Murphy offered a plea to a violation, an unusual jump down from a felony, is “indicative of the total lack of substance in the case.”

Murphy took exception to Mills’ comments.

“I encourage Mr. Mills to go to law school and run for District Attorney,” Murphy said.

"The very idea that a school board member pled guilty to a crime when he previously stated none had been committed is indicitive of his total lack of innocense in this matter," local talk show host and general pain in the @ss Scott Leffler said.

Give me a friggin' break. If Mills could run the school district, I may consider taking his opinion on anythingn else. But he can't. He should stick to what he doesn't know. ... oh, wait ... nevermind.

This is the same school district that had a middle school principal resign after pleading guilty to two misdemeaner charges last summer. Ruhmel was originally charged with a felony, pleaded guilty to a "reduced" charge, is paying back $400. and Mills thinks there's nothing wrong. Am I missing something?

Yes, Ruhmel should resign, but, in a district that has such low moral standards for its school board members ,that will not happen. Also, if he were to resign we would probably be saddled with our former board pres Donna ( I love Jim Mills) Hill. I think the lesser of the two evils is a convicted thief, great options for the taxpayers and students of Newfane.

This is a shame.  Scott I know you dislike the folks in Newfane, but you can not hold Mr. Ruhmel completely responsible.  If the paper was correct in reporting – It stated that under the past Supervisors tenure he would allow this practice of submitting time which would be outside of the summers program period.  I wonder if you look at past years if you would see this has occurred numerous times.  The million dollar question is why make an issue with Ruhmel?  Maybe someone should change the parameters of the payment schedule for this position, so this wouldn’t happen every year.

I believe if our DA was to look at other government identities he would find this same practice and in many cases a more severe abuse of taxpayers dollars.  I just wish one time the DA's office and/or auditors would hold others accountable for the fleecing of taxpayers money.  It would take investigation – not taking the word of the department heads or elected officials.

Unfortunately, this is occurring to often, and sadly it occurs daily.  If the average person only knew the deals and games that are being made, they would have a hard time believing.  The end result is people are buying the company line our local leaders give us and until that changes things will remain the same.
