Once upon a time
there were three Billy Goats called Gruff.
In the winter they lived in a barn in the valley.
When spring came they longed to travel
up to the mountains to eat the lush sweet grass.
On their way to the mountains
the three Billy Goats Gruff had to cross a rushing river.
But there was only one bridge across it,
made of wooden planks.
And underneath the bridge
there lived a terrible, ugly, one-eyed troll.
Nobody was allowed to cross the bridge
without the troll's permission
and nobody ever got permission.
He always ate them up.
The smallest Billy Goat Gruff was first to reach the bridge. Trippity-trop, trippity-trop
went his little hooves as he trotted
over the wooden planks.

Ting-tang, ting-tang went the little bell round his neck.
" Who's that trotting over my bridge ? "
Growled the troll from under the bridge.
"Billy Goat Gruff," squeaked the smallest goat
in his little voice.
"I'm only going up to the mountain
to eat the sweet spring grass."
"Oh no, you're not!" said the troll.
"I'm going to eat you for breakfast!"
" Oh no, please Mr. Troll, " pleaded the goat.
" I'm only the smallest Billy Goat Gruff.
I'm much too tiny for you to eat,
and I wouldn't taste very good.
Why don't you wait for my brother,
the second Billy Goat Gruff ?
He's much bigger than me
and would be much more tasty. "
The troll did not want to waste his time on a little goat if there was a bigger and better one to eat.
"All right, you can cross my bridge," he grunted.
"Go and get fatter on the mountain
and I'll eat you on your way back!"
So the smallest Billy Goat Gruff
skipped across to the other side.


The troll did not have to wait long
for the second Billy Goat Gruff.
Clip-clop, clip-clop went his hooves
as he clattered over the wooden planks.

Ding-dong, ding-dong went the bell around his neck.
"Who's that clattering across my bridge?"
screamed the troll,
suddenly appearing from under the planks.
" Billy Goat Gruff, " said the second goat in his middle-sized voice.
"I'm going up to the mountain
to eat the lovely spring grass."
"Oh no you're not!" said the troll.
"I'm going to eat you for breakfast."
" Oh, no, please, " said the second goat.
" I may be bigger than the first Billy Goat Gruff,
but I'm much smaller than my brother,
the third Billy Goat Gruff.
Why don't you wait for him?
He would be much more of a meal than me. "
The troll was getting very hungry,
but he did not want to waste his appetite
on a middle-sized goat
if there was an even bigger one to come.
" All right, you can cross my bridge," he rumbled.
" Go and get fatter on the mountain
and I'll eat you on your way back ! "
So the middle-sized Billy Goat Gruff scampered across to the other side.


The troll did not have to wait long
for the third Billy Goat Gruff.
Tromp-tramp, tromp-tramp went his hooves
as he stomped across the wooden planks.
Bong-bang, bong-bang went the big bell round his neck.
" Who's that stomping over my bridge?" roared the troll, resting his chin on his hands.
" Billy Goat Gruff, " said the third goat in a deep voice.
" I'm going up to the mountain
to eat the lush spring grass. "
" Oh no you're not, " said the troll
as he clambered up on to the bridge.
" I'm going to eat you for breakfast ! "
" That's what you think, "
said the Biggest Billy Goat Gruff.

Then he lowered his horns, galloped along the bridge
and butted the ugly troll.
Up, up, up went the troll into the air...
then down, down, down into the rushing river below.
He disappeared below the swirling waters,
and was gone.
So much for his breakfast,
thought the biggest Billy Goat Gruff.
" Now what about mine ! "
And he walked in triumph over the bridge
to join his two brothers on the mountain pastures.
From then on everyone could cross the bridge whenever they liked - thanks to the
Three Billy Goats Gruff.

Was there a race of trolls or just this one. You are correct however this is a wonderful story and carried with it some very deep meanings for ADULTS too. The moral of the story is this: There was probably only one troll and now the species is extinct. The three Billy Goars sure were Gruff by Bullying and Gang-banging the poor bridge dweller.


If it was HIS bridge and if you were in HIS territory, then he deserved to be eaten! Where were these Three Billy's before this? Why did they just choose to cross this bridge instead of using their regular route?  NOW the hungry bridge dweller is dead. What a crappy and sad tale to tell. Sounds like Empire Building, Bullying and scant justification for tresspassing and murder. Sleep tight tonight kiddies--Here's another bed time story.  "Once upon a time, there lived an axe murderer under your bed." ...


And what's the message StarLot? Is this now the place to put adult lessons? That would be nice...

Wow you really missed that one anonymous. You see the bridge was the only way to cross the river and the troll knew that. The troll decided that he should be the judge and jury of all who wanted to cross the river. Much like modern day border patrol. The rules of common decency did not apply to the troll because he could eat all that challenged him because no one ever tried to stop him. Then one day the hungry Billy goats said we just are not going to take this anymore. The first two outsmarted the greedy troll, and the third push back.


You see anonymous people are only willing to take so much before they push back. Trolls are no more than bullies are and bullies are just plain cowards. It would seem that this story hit a nerve with at least one anonymous poster because it was pushed down by several other threads. What about this story bothers you so anonymous. You wouldn’t be a bully or even worse a troll would you?


I’ll have to look around for another story that might be more appropriate for you.

THERE ARE DEFINiTE SIGNS OF PREMEDITATION IN THIS STORY. TODAY, THE GRUFF BROTHERS WOULD BE AWAITING TRANSFER FROM ALBION CF, SENTENCE: 25 TO LIFE IN ATTICA FOR A GAND MURDER AND RELATED R.I.C.O. CHARGES! OR, THEY WOULD BE AWAITING LETHAL INJECTION DOWNSTATE DANNEMORRE MAYBE-OSSINING WHILE EXPENDING MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS ON FRUITLESS APPLES AFTER BEING CAUGHT LITERALLY WITH SMOKING HORNS.

When I was a KID this one always scared me and still makes little children afraid to look underneath their beds. I think this story has already been banned from most preschools.. Yes, ShuLight, please get another story.

I can see that you like to pick things apart anonymous. Funny you do that just like someone else who posts here. Anyway, you are obviously very fond of trolls and will not see the age-old lesson this story teaches. Perhaps the “Three little pigs” would be more your liking. The story is much to long to post so I will have to give you the link. I look forward to your response.

Funny is this "observation" after only 6 , count em, six posts. Seems like with almost 8,000 posts to this site, that's a pretty large leap and big statement coming from a "brand new user." StarLess, that is a very presumptuous and pompous claim to make being that you're such a "new user." Have you read many of those? Some people just sit back and watch a while before making comments instead of coming into a room guns-a-blazin. To each their own I guess.

AND HERE WE HAVE ANOTHER NEW AND IDLE REGISTRY coming out swinging (Troll Buster - 2 posts) WITH TWO POSTS EXACTLY AND ONE OF THOSE IS AN ATTACK, the other, about a cookie. Odd, and then to try and spin the use of this guys past post seems pretty obvious and not the smartest thing to do as far as anyone making a direct association between the two. All one has to do is go back and look for this post. HOW CREEPY that this is being done. Phew! Hang your heads whoever you are! And I really don't think anyone cares who you are. So my guess was correct about this anonymous poster being the person that sent me to this site. Yes I have made only 7 posts here but also made several on the other site. You directed me here so I could see for myself what was posted. Why would an anonymous poster get so upset about a story? You got very defensive after one post of a childrens story. Now you are attacking the same person, whom you claimed was me or a relative of mine on the other site.


You sent me to this site and now are angry because I don't agree with you. Maybe my next story should be "The Boy Who Called Wolf"


I've only been reading here a couple of weeks maybe some of you explain all this bashing to me. Please not you nucluerlou, you have said enough.

It might just be the holidays, or, it might be the types of posts that are often left by some. Usually, I spend this time of the year sitting with kids in my lap and wearing a white stick-on beard. Wink

If you got in the middle of this crossfire, I do apologize! There have been numerous attacks by anonymous people elsewhere and by others with catchy and continuously changing screen names. There's lots of $$ in these subjects, property values, loans, businesses, liability and the government really has some accounting to do for what's happened here. It would be unfortunate if some folks posting around were on a specific agenda. Last evening, there was a viewer here from another site that was looking at the troll posts. It seems that they are having the same problems with their blog site. If you search Martha, you can find these same sorts of disruptive posts all under the title of Troll(s), environmental trolls, nuclear trolls and the like.

It's OK though if others attack me as it's happened form here to Vienna Smiler I am sorry for the snip back at you though in the return.

Please be genuine and sincere is all I would ask of anyone posting on these threads because they are so serious and if you were born anywhere below the ridge or elsewhere in Niagara, the County once beautiful, God Bless!

I only hope this helps to explain things to those that are reasonable, just and balanced.

The 3 Billy Goats Gruff story actually has vague references to the Devil, good and evil, maifest destiny, etc. If you trace this tale back to it's 19th Century Scandanavian origin, and then brought to the US sometime mid-century during the Great American Civil War ("Trolls" were associated with state borders, bridge crossing fees and taxes, hence, when brought to the US the source of the subliminal anti-oppression political message and meaning was applied to the time period.)

A complex and definite lesson for adults and children in tumultuous times. This folk-tale story was also meant to scare little children into submission-think bedtime, (as long as matre tells her children that THEY are the Troll slayers--onward Christian Soldier and that kind of thing--No Fear, Troll Dead), in addition to being a subtle message and early attempt at subliminal direction through chosen word use and posturing of terms. The image that this story conjurs in the mind of a young child would certainly create bias against people with "one terrible-eye," a "beastly wooden leg," or a "horribly" disfigured face (like the recent French lady-mauled by the dog), a certain color uniform or, perhaps against People of Color, etc..

The poster using the Billy Goat analogy has a very strange viewpoint on things. Sorry Starport, New Kid, Strangelove, Trollhuggerer and others.
Some stories, especially those from a period of global slavery, may not be the correct or best to tell children. Just a thought and no offense . intended .

Hey, Horse'sAss: Anonymous posters don't have "an honest opinion." Signing in and out are we now? Why not make all commentary directly and sign it? I think it's more than a little obvious IMHO. You're addressing an anoymous poster as if you knew who was who--after just saying something about tracking trolls? THIS IS NOT nuclearlou. You should address him with a little more respect. Attack you? Ha. Be glad he didn't. From what can be seen in your postings, you're lucky that he hasn't lambasted you more. Your arguments are lame and questions worse.. As another poster said somewhere, you have contributed nothing either, only dissent.

He's probably been chased around the block by much bigger dogs than you. You seem to be antagonistic or just a dweeb and looking to get bit. Which is it there StarHart? Teasing the dog are we?

Childhood story's and Names:Lois Gibbs,Erin Brockovich,...Remember how these storys started?


Moving the schools that sit or are near polluted land.Or schools that are near factorys,that put children indanger.That is the story ,the only story.You keep bringing my name up,over and over.Bring the schools names up.There is  a story of a school being closed due to what the factory puts out in the air.You may want to look into that.


It does not matter what we think of each other as long as the out come is the kids being safe.


Attacking each other is a waste of time imo.Questions are not.Just because we question things does not mean we do not want the same outcome.May you all find peace within.
