Wal-Mart Must Sell "Plan B"
Permalink Closed

"BOSTON Feb 14, 2006 (AP)— The state pharmacy board ordered Wal-Mart on Tuesday to stock emergency contraception pills at its stores in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts becomes second state to require the world's largest retailer to carry the morning-after pill.

A Wal-Mart spokesman said the company would comply with the directive by the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy and is reviewing its nationwide policy on the drug.

Story Link  I'm mixed on this one.

Part of me says the morning-after pill is a vital necessity that should be available to anyone who may need it.

Part of me says the state has no right to demand that a private company has to sell a certain item. The Wal-Mart pharmacy is still part of Wal-Mart. If they chose not to sell children's vitamins or blood-pressure monitors, that's their choice.

It's odd, because there are cases where I think the state should put limits on what can be sold, such as dynamite, or spare organs. Whaddya think?

The Libertarian in me says if WalMart chooses not to sell "plan B," that's up to them. And if they wish to sell dynamite or uzi's that's their call too. The market will work it out if there are that many people that want the drug ... or that choose to boycott them for their decision to sell semi-automatic weapons.

The last thing we need is the government telling stores what they can/can't/and must sell.

What's next? Government is going to tell WalGreens that they have to be open 24/7 in case someone needs emergency contraception? At what point does the free market become "free?"
